Zachary Taylor, 1784-1850. 12th President of the United States, 1849-1850. Rare presidential Document Signed, Z. Taylor, Washington, D.C., May 24, 1849. Countersigned by Secretary of the Treasury William M. Meredith. Because of Taylor's short time in office, his presidential autograph material is the third rarest among American presidents, behind that of William Henry Harrison and James A. Garfield. Taylor held office just a few days more than 16 months, from March 4, 1849, until his untimely death on July 9, 1850. In this document, Taylor appoints John Young as "Collector of the customs for the District and Inspector of the Revenue for the Port of Sandusky, in the State of Ohio." Taylor has boldly signed his customary signature, using only his first initial, at the lower right. The document is uniformly toned, but all of the writing is dark and easily readable. The paper seal is completely intact. There are some edge chipping, a repaired fold split and tears, and a bit of staining at the bottom well away from Taylor's signature. For unexplained reasons, the signature of Secretary of State Daniel Webster, clipped from a document dated January 21, 1851, is tipped to the bottom left corner of the document. Webster did not serve as Secretary of State under Taylor but was appointed by Taylor's successor, President Millard Fillmore, on July 23, 1850. The document has been nicely double matted in white with an engraving of Taylor and framed in a gilt wood frame to an overall size of approximately 17" x 25". We have not examined the document out of the frame. We understand, however, that it has been conservation framed. The mat board indeed appears to be acid-free, and the piece is glazed with what appears to be ultraviolet plexiglass. _____________
